First Principles Education, the leading study skills education-technology company in Singapore, is proud to announce the promotion of Marsya Ruzana (Aw) to the role of Head of Study Skills. Marsya is a seasoned educator with over a decade of diverse teaching experience ranging from primary schools to private tuition centres.

As the Head of Study Skills, she will spearhead innovation in their mentoring programmes, the first and only of such study habits transformation in Singapore. Marsya will also ensure all applicants are assessed to be a good fit before they are offered to join First Principles Education’s mentoring programme.

From Struggles to Success:

Marsya’s journey with First Principles Education began during her undergraduate studies at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Faced with her own academic challenges, she realised the shortcomings of traditional educational methods and her personal lack of effective study skills. Her path crossed with Emil Lim, CEO and Founder of First Principles Education, who became her study skills mentor. Under his guidance, Marsya not only improved her own academic results but also found her calling as a study skills mentor herself.

Because of her own transformational experience with study skills, she decided to pursue her Master’s Degree from NTU in the Science Of Learning, diving deep into the neuroscience of how learning takes place, educational theories and practical applications of study skills.

Innovative Mentoring for Modern Learning

As the new Head of Study Skills, Marsya will utilise her Masters in the Science of Learning to implement a series of innovative mentoring methods that focus on practical, student-centred

learning techniques. Her approach is grounded in the latest neuroscience research, tailored to meet the unique needs of each student.

She has also assembled an academic board comprising top talents in the field of behavioural science, psychology and neuroscience to further drive innovation in First Principles Education’s study skills mentoring programme.

Marsya is currently spearheading a campaign to introduce a new A.I Powered tool developed by First Principles Education to help students learn from their mistakes and not repeat them again in the future. Marsya’s vision is to empower students to become independent learners, equipped with skills that go beyond the classroom and will set them up for success beyond primary and secondary school.

A Community-Oriented Approach

Through her Master’s Degree course work, Marsya has also tapped into the experiences of her peers, who are notable school leaders from reputable educational institutions in Singapore. Their insights gave Marsya the tools to build a warm community of mentor figures who act like role model elder brothers and sisters to their students.

This inspired Marsya to spearhead various initiatives, including weekly refresher clinics at First Principles Education. These clinics are designed to keep the community engaged, reinforce study skills and ensure students remain accountable for applying the skills to the actual schoolwork in Singapore’s education system.

“When I was a tutor, I saw how many students struggled to find joy in learning. This was especially troubling for students with low confidence, high stress and in an environment where their peers have no desire to strive for excellence. As a study skills mentor, I’ve seen how impactful a positive and engaged community can have on young minds and I intend to make that another focus of mine as Head of Study Skills”, Marsya explained.

Impacting Lives and Building Futures

Marsya’s impact on students and educators alike has been profound. Described as “a beacon of hope” by her peers, she has helped countless students adopt a growth mindset and nurtured their independence in becoming disciplined and self-studying skills. Marsya was even awarded the “Most Transformative Mentor” award for successfully helping a mother restore confidence with her daughter, which suffered from rising tensions from the PSLE examinations and her daughter failing to meet her mother’s expectations. Fortunately, the daughter looked up to Marsya as an elder sister figure and in less than 12 weeks, managed to break her bad habits and adopted the best self-revision practices without her mother having to nag at her.

Marsya has also maintained an approval rating above First Principles Education’s 98% benchmark. She regularly spearheads weekly internal discussions on how best to help the students and consistently upskill the team of 50 other mentors to ensure everyone is being the best study skills mentor to their dedicated students.

Making Sure Everyone Is A Right Fit

Marsya will continue to assess and screen every single applicant for First Principles Education’s study habits transformation programme. Because of the premium investment to enrol in the programme, Marsya is committed to ensure the best possible fit for each student’s need. First Principles Education invites parents and students to work with Marsya to determine if their child is a good fit and how best to customise a personalised learning experience for their child. Her expertise and unique approach offer a promising path for students seeking effective and lasting solutions to set themselves up for lifelong success in Singapore’s education system.
